What are the types of Clevis Pins?

Pins are a type of fastener, capable of being inserted into a preformed hole to secure components in an assembly. While being simplistic in nature, pins may come in a number of designs and types that accommodate varying needs. The clevis pin is a common option that one may find across the market, and they are a fastener featuring a cylindrical shape and a formed head on one side. Meanwhile, the tail-end of the component will have one or more cross-holes situated on the shank, allowing it to serve as part of a clevis fastener set or work independently.

In general, clevis pins are best used for applications where there needs to be a flexible connection between two connected parts. In other instances, they may be used alongside other fasteners such as cotter pins, split pins, hitch pins, and hairpins when unthreaded. With these basic capabilities, clevis pins are considered quite useful for settings where the shank will rotate. However, when in their threaded form, clevis pins may also be suitable for lifting and pulling applications where they are implemented alongside a u-shaped shackle fastener system.

While clevis pins may have a similar shape as compared to a bolt, the two are not always interchangeable with their differences in withstanding lateral stress and shearing forces. Despite this, a large bolt can sometimes serve as a standard clevis pin. Additionally, clevis pins themselves come in a number of subtypes that vary in design and capability. As such, it is very important that one takes the time to consider their needs before making a purchasing decision so that the right fastener can be procured.

The SEA clevis pin is a product manufactured to the standards set out by the Society of Automotive Engineers, meaning that they have set dimensional criteria. SEA-rated clevis pins share some similarities with other options, featuring a cross-hole near the end of the fastener that is opposite of the flanged head. Furthermore, they are unthreaded fasteners with an appearance akin to bolts, though without the helical threads. When using clevis pins, the fastener will be inserted into a hole to secure components.

Standard clevis pins are generally used in lieu of bolts and rivets for settings where quick fastening and unfastening of components is required, and they are often installed as a part of a three-piece clevis fastener assembly. While having capabilities that overlap with bolts and rivets, they are more advanced in their ability to lock components in place in a quick fashion while still guaranteeing a secure hold and cost-effective purchasing price.

With a headless clevis pin, an unthreaded shank is provided while being devoid of any ridge at one end. Instead, these clevis pins will have an end that is either drilled, grooved, or both. Additionally, they will often be designed to be secured using a retaining ring, wire ring, or e-clip that keeps everything in place. For their applications, headless clevis pins are commonly used in settings where a significant lateral force is present. Furthermore, they may also be solid, grooved, or drilled based on the fastener type that they are paired with.

Alongside such examples, one may also take advantage of other various types, those of which include bent clevis pins, grooved clevis pins, and other such types.
